What are the best countries to visit in September? September is a great time to travel and go on holiday because the kids are back in school meaning there are fewer crowds but much of the world is still holding onto that nice summer temperature before going into Autumn.
In this post, I’ll give you plenty of ideas of where to travel in September, from Europe’s late‑summer sunshine where the beaches of Greece and Croatia are much quieter than the summer months, to spring days in the Southern Hemisphere where you can go wildflower spotting and hiking, and countries to visit in Asia between the rainy seasons.
September provides the perfect shoulder season travel between school holidays, so let’s get into where to go on holiday in September!
1. TÜRKİYE
If I think back about where I have travelled the most in the month of September, one of the answers is Türkiye (the next is number 2 in this list!). Türkiye in the summer months get very hot so it’s actually best to visit in the shoulder seasons of May, June, September and October.
Whether you’re looking for a late summer all-inclusive holiday package where you can enjoy the heat of Southern Türkiye without the summer crowds in places like Antalya or Dalaman, or, you want a city break to Istanbul where the sun will still be shining and it will be t-shirt weather throughout the month.
My top recommendation though for where to go in September is Cappadocia in Türkiye, especially late September when the weather cools. You’ll get to see fairytale scenery, go horse riding and go in one of the iconic hot air balloons, and I say that because I did it the other year!

2. NORWAY
Norway is the next country I have visited most in September. The weather varies depending on if you go at the start of the month or the end of the month and how far North you go.
We did road trip to Norway in late September heading up North from Bergen to Alesund and if you’re itching for early Autumn colours, I recommend this because by late September Northern Norway is heading into Autumn!
However, if you want to experience late summer Scandinavian days where the weather is still warm and the days still feel long, head to Oslo or Stavanger in early September and enjoy being by the water with fewer crowds than the summer.

3. GREECE
Greece is up there with the best countries to visit in September because from June to August, prices are hiked, accommodation is booked and these small islands are busy with summer holiday tourists, however come September, the islands get a bit of a breather from the families visiting, but the weather is still really perfect.
Athens is one of the surprising options for a city break in September because you can enjoy the city and head to nearby beaches. Popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos will still be busy but should be more enjoyable in September.

4. CROATIA
If Croatia is still on your list to visit, September is a great option because Croatia stands out as one of the best countries to visit in September in Europe. The Adriatic is still lovely for swimming, but beaches and cities are far less crowded. It’s a brilliant time for island‑hopping between Korčula, Vis and Hvar, or taking a coastal road trip from Dubrovnik to Zadar with clear skies and calmer roads.
Beyond the coast, Croatia’s natural landscapes are at their best. Plitvice Lakes and Krka National Park are cooler for walking, and waterfalls often flow stronger after summer rains. Inland regions such as Istria take on an autumn glow, with truffle season beginning and vineyards in full harvest. With comfortable temperatures, peaceful travel and plenty of local festivals, Croatia is one of the top holiday destinations in September.

5. PORTUGAL
September is considered as the best time to visit Portugal because of the manageable temperatures and relaxed post‑summer vibe. Coastal regions like the Algarve are quieter yet still lively, making it ideal for beach days, coastal hikes along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, or a scenic road trip between hidden coves.
In the north, Porto and the Douro Valley shine in September with grape harvest season bringing vineyard tours and local wine festivals. Lisbon feels more local again and makes one of the best destination for a city break in September, giving you space to enjoy its viewpoints, pastel‑tiled streets, and trams. Inland, the Alentejo countryside glows golden after summer, perfect for slow travel, boutique stays, and olive picking experiences.

6. SPAIN
Spain is one of the all-round best countries to visit no matter the time of year but September is truly one of the top months to visit. As with much of Europe, Spains temperature has settled in September but it still offers sunny warm days and great beach weather. Think about the islands of Ibiza, Majorca and even the Canary Islands. We went hiking in Tenerife in late September the other year and hiked up a Mount Teide Volcano which is the highest point in Spain in September and it was hot!
Busy cities such as Barcelona and Granada are much nicer to visit in September and one of my favourite Spain trips was an Andalusian road trip from Malaga which would be ideal in September too.
Talking of Malaga and places like Alicante which often have cheap flights, think about an extreme day trip to spend the day on the beach in September before coming home later that night.

7. INDONESIA
Heading into Asia, just like the earlier summer months, Indonesia wins at the best country in Asia to visit in September because unlike much of South East Asia where the summer months are rainy, much of Indonesia is clear and sunny in the summertime.
Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands are especially perfect in September because of the clear weather. Explore the rice terraces in Bali and enjoy excellent diving and all round island life on the Gili Islands. I spent 4 months living on the Gili Islands the other year and it really is the dream! Beyond this popular area, Komodo National Park is at its best for seeing the famous dragons and vibrant coral reefs in September and Flores offers breathtaking volcano treks and colourful crater lakes.
With its combination of tropical sunshine, fewer crowds and diverse landscapes, Indonesia in September delivers everything you’d want from a late‑season escape in one of the world’s best countries to visit in September.

8. MALAYSIA
Also at the top of the list of the best countries to visit in South East Asia in September is Malaysia, because like a chunk of Indonesia, September is the end of the dry summer season on the east coast before the wet season starts.
I visited the Perhentian Islands on the West Coast a few years ago and these 2 islands are true island life paradise. The thing is, they are only open from March to October, with September one of the best months to visit because of the weather and fewer mid summer crowds. Over on the east coast, islands like Langkawi which are not recommended during the summer months have much better weather and you can enjoy the mainland, visiting places like the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the Cameron Highlands and enjoy more comfortable weather, making it easy to mix beach time with city and nature adventures on a Malaysian holiday in September.
While parts of Borneo see the first signs of rain, the conditions remain good for wildlife spotting, and areas such as Sabahare lush and full of life.

It’s an excellent time for travellers who want to experience the country’s landscapes and culture in comfort, with slightly fewer crowds than in the spring cherry blossom season or the later Autumn season crowds.

In cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, the slightly quieter atmosphere makes sightseeing, shopping and dining more enjoyable, while street festivals and local food markets begin ramping up after the summer lull.

Beyond the cities, September is perfect for adventure and nature. The Atlas Mountains offer ideal trekking conditions, with clear trails and Berber villages surrounded by late‑summer greenery. Down south, the Sahara Desert becomes comfortable again for camel rides, stargazing and overnight stays in desert camps. Coastal towns such as Essaouira and Taghazout have warm seas and a laid‑back vibe, excellent for surfing or simply soaking up local culture by the Atlantic. For an all-inclusive holiday in September which offers beautifully warm and dry weather, with calm turquoise seas and average temperatures around 26°C, Mauritius is one of the best countries to visit in September.
Many of the island’s top resorts offer all‑inclusive packages that make relaxing incredibly easy, from beachfront dining and water sports to sunset cruises and spa treatments. With fewer visitors than in the December high season, you’ll find peaceful beaches and excellent value for luxury stays.
You don’t need to stay by the pool in Mauritius though, many all‑inclusive hotels organise day trips to nearby reefs, catamaran cruises, or guided excursions to the island’s natural highlights, such as Chamarel Waterfall and Black River Gorges National Park and September’s dry days and gentle breezes mean you can enjoy activities like snorkelling, kayaking or cycling without the intense summer heat.

September is in the heart of Peru’s dry season when the Andes enjoy clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The ancient city of Cusco and the gateway to Machu Picchu is less busy than the summer months and offers magnificent mountain views and crisp, fresh air. in September.

The Atacama Desert in the north basks in clear skies and pleasant warmth for stargazing and exploring salt flats, while central regions around Santiago and Valparaíso start to bloom with wildflowers and vineyards preparing for the growing season.
September is also the month of Fiestas Patrias, Chile’s national celebrations, when locals fill parks and plazas with music, barbecues and traditional dancing — an authentic highlight for anyone visiting at this time of year.
Further south, spring transforms Patagonia as snow recedes and trails reopen in Torres del Paine National Park, offering early views of greenery and wildlife before the main tourist rush. The Lake District becomes especially beautiful, with snow‑capped volcanoes reflected in deep blue waters and milder temperatures for kayaking or hiking.

Finishing off this list of the best places to visit in September is New Zealand for a late winter / early spring break. Snow still caps the Southern Alps while the lowlands turn green with wildflowers and blossoms, creating a striking contrast across the country. It’s a wonderful time for road trips through the South Island, where you can still ski in Queenstown or Wanaka early in the month and then explore Fiordland or Aoraki/Mount Cook as the weather warms.
